11 utterly unique hotels that will make you rethink your holiday plans

Take everything you thought you knew about hotels and throw it out the window.

EVERYONE LOVES A good hotel: the novelty of sleeping in a different bed, the fancy bathroom, the way it’s always spick and span whenever you return.

These hotels, though? These hotels are taking things to the next level.

1. Chocolate Boutique Hotel

There are chocolate-themed cafés, so it only makes sense that chocolate aficionados have a hotel to stay in.

The Chocolate Boutique Hotel is a refurbished 18th-century hotel located in Bournemouth and is a Mecca for chocolate fans with little bowls of chocolate dotted around the hotel, chocolate-coloured interiors and choc-centric breakfasts.

They also offer workshops with chocolatiers and the rooms are called things like “Seventy Per Cent” and “Aztec”.

2. Old Station

A converted railway station that now operates as a hotel, Old Railway Station Hotel is exactly what it says in the tin. Located in West Sussex, it’s perfectly quaint and delightful. It’s also probably the only chance you’ll get to sleep in a train station without having to miss a train, so.

3. Kakslautannen

An Arctic resort in Finland, Kakslauttanen is arguably most famed for its igloos. From the igloo, you can admire the northern lights overhead with the added benefit of, you know, heat.

Pure magic.

4. Dog Bark Park Inn

Dog Bark Park Inn is essentially a  big ol’ slice of Americana – a bed and breakfast located inside a giant carved beagle. (It looks and sounds like something from an Alexander Payne film.)

The hotel is run by two chainsaw artists, who create loads of little carved canine figures. In the rooms, guests will find dog-shaped biscuits, dog throw pillows, etc. Sure, where else would you get it?

5. Qbic Hotel

Qbic Hotel is a ‘smart hotel’ with branches in Amsterdam and London. Its Cubi rooms boast futuristic design and function as a work-and-dine space. Some rooms also feature a range of different coloured lights, which may prove distracting if you’re trying to work…

6. Propeller Island City Lodge

This hotel bills itself as “a habitable work of art” and “a magnet for creative individuals, those weary of consumption”. Okay, so it might be utterly pretentious, but this Berlin hotel still has rooms unlike anything else you’ll find in a Radisson.

There’s an upside down room in which items hang from the ceiling as guests sleep in a box under the floorboards. There’s a prison cell room, which is a recreation of a prison cell and includes a toilet in the middle of the floor.

Guests can also opt to sleep in coffins, if they so wish, but we think that sounds a bit much.

7. Keio Plaza Hotel

In honour of Hello Kitty’s 40th birthday, Keio Plaza has opened a room dedicated to the iconic character. (Lest we forget this year’s startling revelation that the character is not in fact a cat, but a little girl.)

Ideal for anybody who grew up with a Hello Kitty pencil case and wants to take their obsession to the next level.

8. Georgian House Hotel

Harry Potter fiend? This is the hotel for you.

Its Wizard Chambers look as though they were transported straight from the imagination of JK Rowling and contain loads of lovely touches like four-poster beds, gothic archways and cauldrons.

9. The Music Hotel

nhow Berlin describes itself as “Europe’s first music hotel” and it includes “guitar and keyboard room service” among its facilities. Perhaps the most eyecatching thing about the hotel is the music-oriented signs, though, which incorporate pop lyrics.

The non-musicians among us may not be able to avail of the aforementioned facilities, but who among us doesn’t want a selfie taken beside a Salt-N-Pepa door sign?

10. Kolarbyn Eco Lodge

If you want to go all primitive on it, Kolarbyn Ecolodge in Sweden offers guests the chance to rough it sans luxuries like electricity, running water, etc. The ecolodge contain wooden beds that the website explicitly implies are not comfortable.

But it is located in a lush forest two hours outside of Stockholm, inhabited by cute Swedish squirrels and surrounded by a lake. We can already feel the stress begin to dissolve from our tired, weary bodies.

11. Clare Island Light House

LightHouse-Front-Exteriour13

A converted lighthouse located in Clare Island off Clew Bay, Clare Island Lighthouse offers guests the chance to sleep in a real-life lighthouse tower. With incredible views overlooking the wild and whippy ocean below, it’s as atmospheric as they come.

Also provides you with a good opportunity to listen to this.
